Former Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said last year that the company had been slow to adopt advertising to counter competition from major digital firms. While Disney (DIS) has been aggressively creating one for the Disney+ streaming platform, cheaper ad-supported solutions are already available on other streaming services like HBO Max, Hulu, Peacock, and Paramount+.

Following the news on Wednesday, Netflix share prices were almost unchanged. Over 60% more have been added so far this year.
